Forward-facing safety alerts are essential in commercial fleet technology. When a driver is concentrating on traffic, mirrors, navigation, and changing road conditions at the same time, it can be difficult to react immediately to every potential hazard. We see an important role for AI video telematics here because it can monitor the road continuously and provide an alert when certain risk conditions are detected.

At BSJ Technology, we develop AI video telematics equipment for commercial fleets, platform providers, and system integrators. Our approach is to combine video recording with intelligent safety functions so that fleet operators can gain more useful information from each journey. Understanding how a dashcam with ADAS works can help buyers evaluate these systems more realistically.
ADAS, or Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, uses cameras and software algorithms to identify situations that may require the driver's attention. It is important to understand that these systems are designed to assist rather than replace the driver.
A typical ADAS application can examine the forward road scene for events such as:
The exact functions depend on the hardware, camera position, software algorithms, and configured thresholds. We therefore recommend evaluating an ADAS system according to its actual operating environment rather than assuming that every device provides identical detection performance.
An ADAS dashcam essentially turns a camera feed into a sequence of decisions. The camera captures the road, while onboard processing analyzes visual information and looks for predefined risk patterns.
Our DR03 illustrates this architecture. It uses a 1.0 TOPS AI NPU and runs on Linux, allowing ADAS and DMS algorithms to operate within the same compact device. The system can process forward-facing information while also supporting driver monitoring functions.
The general process can be understood in four stages:
1. Capture: The forward camera continuously records the road environment.
2. Detection: AI algorithms identify relevant vehicles, lanes, pedestrians, or other visual features.
3. Risk assessment: The system evaluates factors such as distance, position, and movement to determine whether a predefined warning condition has been reached.
4. Alert: The driver receives an appropriate warning, while the event can potentially be recorded or transmitted for fleet review.
No camera-based safety system operates in isolation from the real world. Lighting, weather, road markings, camera mounting position, traffic density, and image quality can all influence what a visual algorithm can detect.
For fleet operators, this means the performance of a dashcam with ADAS should be considered within the conditions in which vehicles actually operate. Urban delivery routes, highways, buses, and long-haul trucks can create very different visual environments.
Forward-risk detection becomes more useful when paired with information about the driver. A vehicle can encounter a hazardous situation while the driver is also distracted or fatigued, creating a higher operational concern than either event alone.
The DR03 combines ADAS with Driver Monitoring System functions. This allows one device to address both sides of the safety equation: what is happening ahead of the vehicle and what is happening with the person behind the wheel. Over time, these records can support safety training and help managers focus on higher-risk behaviors.
An alert without context can raise questions. Why did the system issue the warning? What was happening around the vehicle? Did the driver respond appropriately?
Video can help answer those questions. DR03 supports up to three camera channels, allowing the system to cover the forward road view, the cabin, and an optional external camera depending on configuration. It records HD video using H.264 encoding and supports emergency recording and uploading.
An onboard alert is useful for the driver, but centralized information can be valuable for the fleet operator. DR03 includes 4G LTE CAT.4 connectivity and multi-constellation GNSS support, including GPS, Galileo, BeiDou, and GLONASS. This enables the device to provide both connectivity and positioning for connected fleet applications.
We also designed the platform with remote management in mind. DR03 supports remote configuration and FOTA updates, which can reduce the need for physical intervention when a fleet has vehicles distributed across different locations.
These capabilities provide the infrastructure needed to move from individual vehicle warnings toward broader fleet-level analysis.
When we evaluate an ADAS dashcam, we look beyond the number of advertised AI functions. We consider processing capability, camera coverage, communications, positioning, power compatibility, remote management, and integration with the customer's existing telematics platform.
DR03, for example, supports a wide 9–90V input range, three-channel video, global GNSS, 4G connectivity, and integration-oriented remote management features. These specifications make it suitable for a range of commercial vehicles, but the final configuration still needs to match the customer's vehicle type and software environment.
At BSJ Technology, we focus on AI video telematics, GPS tracking, and connected fleet hardware for commercial transportation, supporting OEM and ODM cooperation and integration with third-party fleet systems, which allows our technology to be adapted to specific project requirements.
Ultimately, a forward-warning camera should not be judged simply by how many alerts it can produce. We believe its real value comes from detecting relevant risks, giving drivers useful warnings, preserving the surrounding evidence, and making that information available to fleet managers. When these functions work together, a dashcam with ADAS becomes a practical component of a broader fleet-safety strategy rather than just another recording device.
